We set big goals in 2017 to keep us hungry and humble.
We won some, we lost some, and we learned from all of them.
Reflecting over this past year, we took ourselves back to what we’d set out to achieve in 2017 and check the goals that we met, failed at, and forgot about along the way.
Here are the top 4 goals Team Corker had for 2017:
1. Host 3 sold-out DisruptHR YVR events → Check!
2. Double our team’s capacity → Check!
DisruptHR YVR taught us a lot about hosting events in Vancouver (e.g. it’s not cheap!) and what it really means to disrupt something. Skepticism is real and, rather than trying the disruptive ideas, people are quick to judge and want a “how to manual” on innovation (which isn’t very innovative now is it!).
Adding capacity meant we had the revenue and the demand from clients. We excitedly added two team members, Lawrence and Sim, and they’ve been the best additions to Team Corker. We couldn’t have gotten to where we are today without their help.
3. Enrol 5000 people in Manager Start Line → Fail!
4. We positively disrupt the recruiting space → Fail!
These felt really big when we set them. These were our WTF goals (willing to fail at..). We knew if we reached these targets for the year, we didn’t set our sights high enough. So while we made incredible progress, we didn’t reach the goal. And it takes real heart to admit when you failed without excuses, blame, or defence.
Here’s what we learned:
1. Focus on what matters most.
What drives our business forward requires the most attention for us. DisruptHR YVR is something that pulled our focus away from our main business drivers, so instead of hosting three next year, we’re committed to delivering one. Quality over quantity.
2. Be home for dinner.
We travel a lot and, if we’re done our meetings or workshops for the day, rule of thumb: jump on the next plane home. Time with our family matters most to us.
3. Communicate it all.
The good. The bad. Everything. From everywhere. Wherever you are in the world and wherever you’re at in relation to your goals. Knowing is better than nothing.
So while we may have failed, new goals are afoot for 2018 to bring the fire! From our wins and failures, we’ve learned a lot in 2017 and we can’t wait to see what next year has in store.
