These are the things I care about.
When I prepare to teach a yoga class, I prepare to bring my best.
When I have a free Sunday, I want to spend it with friends and family.
When I am making breakfast in the morning, I want to eat real food — preferably the green kind.
In those situations, it’s easy to be consistent with what I care about.
It doesn’t take much effort or intentional thought.
It’s easy to be aligned and integrated here.
The more interesting thing for me is what we do when the stakes are raised.
When the client I am working with doesn’t have a clear direction or vision for her people or department … do I speak up and take a stand for goals or do I say nothing and take the money?
When I am in the sixth set in my workout, my arms are tired, the lactic acid is building, and I just want to give up … am I feeding my head with thoughts that are kind to myself or thoughts that take my power away?
When a friend wants to make a life shift yet comes up with a million reasons why now isn’t the right time … do I offer her opportunities to have courage and live in integrity with who she wants to be or do I let her off the hook and say things like “oh, it’s ok, you can hate your job for another few months.”
In those situations, it takes more effort and intention to show up consistently.
But if I don’t stand for what I care about when it gets hard, do I really care about it?
If I stand for health, but only at breakfast, then do I really stand for health?
If I stand for courageous conversations, but not with your boss, then do I really stand for courage?
If I stand for goals, but not when money could be lost, then do I really stand for goals?
