Why You Shouldn’t Only Set Goals This Year

We know—this isn’t what you’d ever expect us to say.

 

It’s the start of a new year, resolutions and goals have been made, and people are off to the races trying to get a head start on what they’ve set out to accomplish this year.

 

And that’s awesome. We’re the biggest advocates for people bringing intention into their lives and going after what they want.

 

But goals are a tool. And you need different tools to get different results. When you’re training to hit a new PB in your next marathon, only running won’t do the trick. What will help you break through your plateau is renovating your diet, creating a weight training regime, and adding in some hill sprints and stretching. Different tools to help you create different results.

 

When setting out to live your most inspiring and impactful life this year, here’s our list of tools to help you make all the difference:

Habits

Our lives are filled with habits—set behaviours that are repeated consciously until they become easy to repeat instinctually.

 

Waking up at 5:30am every morning. Reading for a half hour before bed. Not checking our phones every five minutes. Saying thank you when someone compliments you.

 

This year, think about the habits you’ve built over your life. What are some you can practice changing for the better to live a healthier and more fulfilled life? It takes work in the beginning, but better habits = more ease and productivity.

Commitments

Committing yourself to something is what influences the actions you take and the choices you make.

 

If you’re committed to healthy eating, this may change how and where you grocery shop, what meals you cook, or the time of day you eat. Committing to adding more fun into your life might influence what hobbies you pick up or what random adventures you say yes to. Maybe you’ll join that volleyball team you’ve been talking about for the past two years. Or, finally take up that paint class with your best friend.

 

Commitments give clarity to our day-to-day actions.

Goals

We haven’t completely forgotten about g-o-a-l-s.

 

Goals are important as they outline the desired result you want to see occur by a certain date. They are about progress and change. So if you don’t want to progress or change anything – don’t set goals. Choose a different tool!

 

Goals work the best when they are written down, with a clear condition for success (how will I know when I’ve completed this?) and a deadline (when do I want to see this result take shape by?). We put our goals in spaces that we can easily and often refer to them. They hang in our office and our bathroom. Brush your teeth and remember your goals? Sounds good to us!

 

Whether you meet your goals or fail really big, the end result is most often a deeper understanding of yourself and your capabilities.

 

At The Corker Co, we each set out our WTF (willing to fail) goals for the year. These are the results we want to create that are so big and important to us that we’d chase them with all our heart. We don’t know if we’ll meet them, but we do know they’re worth chasing.

Use the toolbox

Goals give you direction and a vision for what you want to create and change in the year. Habits help you experience ease in your actions. Commitments keep your goals and habits on track by giving you the clarity to say yes and no powerfully every day.
